A little info on Lewis Carroll and his work:

Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson in 1832. He was a mathematician and an Anglican Deacon. He studied then taught at Christ Church College at Oxford University from 1850 until his death. He took up photography and focused for a time on portraits; his subjects included the poets Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Carroll wrote a sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1871, Through the Looking Glass, a darker work, written while he was suffering from depression. The character of Alice was inspired by Alice Liddell, the daughter of Henry Liddell, the Dean of Christ Church College. Carroll died from pneumonia in 1898.

A little info on Charles Dickens and his work:
Charles Dickens was born in 1812, During his earlier twenties, he began to publish short stories in various periodicals. Pickwick Papers (1837) made him famous. His early novels include Oliver Twist (1838) and A Christmas Carol (1843). In his thirties, the social commentary laced through his novels became darker, as exemplified in Hard Times (1854), A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and Great Expectations, which was serialized 1860-1861. His hectic schedule in his later days (publishing other writers, reading tours, theater, and writing endlessly) took a toll on his health, and he passed away in 1870.

Next up is….The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins (1860)

A little info on Wilkie Collins and his work:

Wilkie Collins was born in 1824 and studied to be a lawyer before devoting himself to writing. His novel, The Moonstone (1868), is considered the first English detective novel. The Woman in White was serialized 1859-1860. It is often called the first “sensation” novel. Sensation novels, which were extremely popular in Victorian era Great Britain in the 1860s and 1870s, mixed gothic and romantic notions, as well as melodrama. The genre sprung out of true crime books. Loss of identity and the wrongly accused man were common plots. (Foreshadowing Hitchcock!) Sensation novels brought together realism and romanticism, and thrillers like The Woman in White, were sometimes called “novels with a secret.” Collins’ life could be as scandalous and sensational as his work, especially after the public became aware of his unconventional love life: he lived with a widow and later met a 19-year-old girl, and for the last 20 years of his life, he maintained romantic relationships with both. Collins met Charles Dickens in 1851, and they became fast friends. Dickens would even go on to publish some of Collins’ work. For a time Wilkie Collins was even more popular than Dickens. He became addicted to laudanum, and when he became ill, it hastened his death, which he occurred in 1889.

Next up is….Moby-Dick by Herman Melville (1851)

A little Herman Melville info:
Herman Melville was born in New York City in 1819. After attending Albany Academy (among other schools), he sailed around Cape Horn, inspired by the book Two Years Before the Mast. For a time he was very close with New England writer Nathaniel Hawthorne; Melville dedicated Moby-Dick to him. The book’s full title is Moby-Dick; or, The Whale. In the novel, the whale is referred to as Moby Dick, without the hyphens. Melville was a Shakespeare scholar, bu the King James Bible and the works of John Milton were also massive influences on his writing. His works include the novel, Billy Budd, Sailor, and the short story, “Bartleby the Scrivener.” Moby-Dick stands as one of the greatest literary triumphs, inspiring generations and people as varied as writer Ralph Ellison, director John Huston, and Bob Dylan, who mentioned him during his Nobel Prize acceptance speech.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1804. Most of us know Hawthorne from having to read The Scarlet Letter in school. Many of us also know Hawthorne from Twice-Told Tales, which I found in an abridged edition when I was in grade school. His first book was Fawnshawe, published anonymously. Hawthorne was part of the Romantic movement, which involved a focus on emotions (including the writer’s), a veneration of nature, and an acceptance of the supernatural, placing much stake in imagination. The Romantics were looking for an aesthetic experience, art true to their inner selves. They rejected Rationalism, Neoclassicism, industrialization, organized religion (Calvinism in particular), rigidity of any kind, and established social conventions and (to a lesser extent) niceties. Besides the works mentioned, Hawthorne is also known for his novel The Blithedale Romance. When he died, his mourners included friends such as Herman Melville (who dedicated Moby-Dick to him), Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
